MSOC: Hofstra Picked Third In CAA Preseason Poll

Hempstead, N.Y. – Hofstra was picked to finish third in the Colonial Athletic Association preseason poll released today. Junior midfielder Joseph Holland and defender Harri Hawkins were named to the CAA All-Preseason team. Senior defender Daniel Grundei earned honorable mention status by garnering multiple votes.

Delaware, which along with Hofstra and UNCW tied for the regular season championship in 2014, was named the preseason favorite in earning 60 points and five first-place votes. The Seahawks came in second at 50 points and two-first place votes. The Pride earned 44 points to be selected third in the nine-team field. Voting was done by the league's head coaches, who could not select his own team. Teams received eight points for a first-place vote, seven for second-place, etc.

Guillermo Delgado was named the Preseason Player of the Year. Delaware's two-time All-America honoree scored a CAA-leading 12 goals and added six game-winners and 26 points to win the Player of the Year award.

Hofstra returns nine starters from a squad that went 10-6-3. Holland is back following a first-team All-CAA season in which he posted a league-leading nine assists and contributed two goals.

Hawkins helped Hofstra notch eight shutouts and played in all 19 games, making 18 starts. He also was named to the all-first team. Grundei scored three goals – all game-winners – despite playing on the back line and started 15 games before suffering an injury at the end of his first Hofstra season. The Towson transfer logged 1,373 minutes overall and was part of a defensive unit that helped Hofstra hold teams to just 20 goals.

The Pride will open the 2015 season by hosting Syracuse and Vermont in a three-day stretch from Aug. 28-30. Opening Day against the Orange is set for 7 p.m.
