New York, NY – Juniors
Jamel Hudson,
Frank Affronti and
Michael Hughes each posted 2-0 individual records on the day but the Hofstra Pride Wrestling team dropped two matches at the fourth annual Grapple at the Garden at Madison Square Garden Sunday afternoon.
The Pride were defeated by the Princeton Tigers, 33-9 in their first match of the morning and their first Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) contest of the season before dropping a 24-13 decision to the Terrapins of Maryland in a non-conference match in the afternoon. Hofstra is now 0-5 overall on the season and 0-1 in the EIWA.
In the first match against Princeton, the Tigers jumped out to a 12-0 lead after sophomore
Bryan Damon was pinned at 125 and the Pride forfeited at 133. But Hudson put the Pride on the board with a 14-13 nail-biting victory over Jordan Laster at 141. Hudson improved to 3-1 on the season. But the Tigers won the next three matches including major decisions at 157 and 165 to open up a 23-3 advantage.
Affronti posted his first win of the day with an impressive 2-0 upset of 11th-ranked Jonathan Schleifer at 174 for the Pride. Affronti improved to 12-4 on the year. But the Tigers tagged on a major decision at 184 and a win by fall at 197 before Hughes (12-2) posted his fifth consecutive victory of the year with 4-2 decision over Ray O'Donnell to wrap up the 33-9 loss to Princeton (1-0, 1-0).
In the second match against Maryland, the Pride found themselves down 9-0 after a loss at 125 and a forfeit at 133. Once again, Hudson (4-1) stopped the opponent's run with a 6-3 decision over Alfred Bannister at 141. The Terrapins won the next three matches including a win by fall at 149 to build a 21-3 lead. Affronti (13-4) then posted a 4-0 win for the Pride over Maryland's Josh Snook at 174 to cut the deficit to 21-6. Senior Jermain John, who was making his 2015-16 dual match debut, recorded a 6-4 victory over Jaron Smith after jumping out to a 6-3 lead after two periods and holding on for the victory.
But Hofstra freshman
Omar Haddad was edged by Maryland's Garrett Wesneski, 1-0 at 197 before Hughes majored Youssif Hermida, 8-0 at 285 in the finale for the 24-13 decision.
Hofstra returns to tournament competition next week when the Pride travels west for the Cliff Keen-Las Vegas Collegiate Invitational on Friday and Saturday, December 4-5 at Las Vegas' Cashman Convention Center.
