SB: Offensive Barrage Keys Hofstra's Doubleheader Sweep Over Delaware

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Newark, Del. – Hofstra scored a season-high in runs in the opener en route to a 15-0 win and a four-run third lifted the Pride to a 5-1 victory in the second game against Delaware in a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon at UD Softball Stadium.

Hofstra, whose previous season high was 13 runs set at Rutgers, scored 15 through just the first four innings in Game 1. The Pride improved to 25-11 overall and 7-4 in CAA play. Delaware fell to 21-21 and 5-8 against the league.

The Pride improved to 61-16 in the all-time series and has won 23 straight against Delaware dating to the 2006 season, including back-to-back years in the CAA Tournament from 2011-12. Hofstra has won 11 of the last 14 games overall.

Sophomore Kim Smith drove in five total runs while shortstop Becca Bigler and junior catcher Erin Trippi totaled four RBIs.

Smith had two doubles in the third inning alone in the opener, smacking a RBI drive to left-center and hitting a bases-clearing two-bagger for four RBIs to ignite an eight-run barrage in which 12 batters came to the plate in the inning. Five Hofstra players scored multiple runs in the game.

Sophomore outfielder Caryn Bailey smashed an opposite-field three-run home run in the second, ending a 21-game stretch without a long ball for Hofstra's leading hitter from 2013. Bigler, Smith and freshman Lacey Clark each scored two runs to build a comfortable advantage for junior starter Morgan Lashley.

Lashley held Delaware to two hits in five innings for her fifth shutout. The right-hander improved to a team-leading 14-4 with 15 complete games. It was the fifth time this season Hofstra won on a run rule.

Hofstra used plate discipline and speed to generate the game-opening run in the first. Senior Rachael Senatore drew a leadoff walk, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on Trippi's RBI ground out off starter Carolyn Szymanski.

Freshman Michaela Transue lined a two-run single to left that chased Szymanski before the right-hander recorded an out in the second inning. Smith singled and back-to-back walks brought up Transue.

Transue, who had recorded one RBI in her first 10 career games, picked up her seventh RBI in the last three contests. Fresh off hitting back-to-back home runs against LSU, Transue's two-run single extended Hofstra's lead to 3-0. Szymanski dropped to 11-10.

Kiersten Coffman came in relief and left the bases loaded in the second. But Hofstra extended its lead in the third on Smith's RBI single. Consecutive base hits brought up Bailey, who muscled an outside pitch over the left-centerfield wall for her third home run of the season and first since March 8 versus Virginia Tech.

Six consecutive Hofstra batters reached base after there were two out and none on in the inning. Bigler drove in another run after getting hit with the bases loaded (it was the second time she was hit in the inning). Smith then hit her three-run double to cap the rally.

The Pride added four unearned runs in the fourth to extend its lead to 15-0, led by Trippi's two-run double.

In the second game, Hofstra loaded the bases with one out in the second against Delaware starter Kelly Lupton. The Pride did not score in that inning but broke through in the third when Trippi's double off the wall in left scored sophomore Chloe Fitzgerald in the third. Bigler drove in two after pulling a hard-hit single to left and score on Smith's RBI double as Hofstra pushed across four runs in the inning.

Junior pitcher Taylor Pirone threw seven innings of four-hit ball in the complete-game win to improve her record to 11-5. The righty notched her 10th complete game. Lupton dropped to 6-7.

Delaware scored its only run of the afternoon on Lisa Stacevicz's RBI single in the fourth. Smith extended Hofstra's lead to 5-1 in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk.

Hofstra will conclude the three-game series on Sunday at noon.
