MBB: Hofstra To Take On Appalachian State On Sunday

Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra Men's Basketball team, winners of two straight and four of their last five games, will look to pick up a key road victory on Sunday when the Pride face Appalachian State at 2 p.m.

It will mark Hofstra's second trip this season to the state of North Carolina, with two more on the docket (UNCW and Elon).

It its last game on Tuesday, Hofstra (5-2) earned an 88-74 home victory over Norfolk State as junior forward Ameen Tanksley poured in a career-high 30 points on 9-9 shooting from the field and 5-5 shooting from three-point range.

Tanksley is on an incredible roll from beyond the arc as over the last four games he is shooting a spectacular 80% (20-25) from three-point range. With his stellar shooting as of late, Tanksley has taken over the team lead in scoring as he is now averaging 18.4 points per game, while also ranking second on the team with 5.9 rebounds per outing.

Junior guard Juan'ya Green is right behind Tanksley as he is averaging 18.3 points, while leading the squad with 47 assists. The duo have each scored in double figures in all six of Hofstra's games this season. Green had 18 points, a game-high eight assists, four steals and three rebounds in the win over the Spartans.

The 5-2 start this season is the program's best since the 2008-09 squad began the year with a 6-1 mark.

Hofstra is 10-7 all-time against the current members of the Sun Belt Conference, but has never faced Appalachian State. Interestingly enough, the Pride was former conference rivals with two members of the Sun Belt as Hofstra and Troy were in the East Coast Conference together in the mid-1990s and Georgia State was a member of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) prior to their membership in the Sun Belt. Those two schools constitute 15 of the 17 meetings as Hofstra is 9-4 against Georgia State and 1-1 against Troy.

Appalachian State is 3-2 this season and is coming off a 67-56 win over Jacksonville on Thursday. Frank Eaves leads the team with 17.8 points per game, while Tommy Spagnolo is third in scoring with 10.4 points and leads the way with 8.0 caroms per outing.

The Mountaineers are coached by Long Island native Jim Fox. He is the brother of former Hofstra men's basketball student-athlete Jeff Fox, who concluded his Pride career in 2001.

Coach Mihalich is 3-0 all-time against Appalachian State as he previously faced them in 2005-06, 2007-08 and 2008-09.
