FH: Stella Schoen's OT Goal Gives Hofstra A 4-3 Win Over Columbia

Box Score Hempstead, NY – Sophomore Stella Schoen scored 2:11 into overtime to give the Hofstra Pride a 4-3 non-conference victory over Columbia at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Hofstra improved to 8-5 on the season and snapped a four-game losing slide. Columbia, which saw their two-game winning streak snapped, fell to 6-4 on the year.

Schoen, who missed seven games earlier this season before returning three games ago, picked up a rebound of a Jonel Boileau shot that was kicked out by Columbia junior goalie Kimberly Pianucci and fired it past the sprawled goalie for her second of the season. Sophomore Claudia Marin Samper scored twice in the contest for Hofstra and junior Charlotte Loehr tied the game at 3-3 with her seventh goal of the season. Freshman goalie Carys Swan made five saves after replacing Lauren Saltus (4 saves) at halftime.

Columbia senior Zoe Blake scored twice and freshman Rebecca Pope added a goal and an assist for the Lions. Sophomore Kendall Kuntz made four second half saves while Pianucci made three saves playing the first half and the overtime.

Columbia jumped out a 2-0 lead in the first 4:54 on goals off penalty corners by Blake, her ninth of the season, and Pope, her third of the year. But Marin Samper cut the Hofstra deficit to 2-1 as the first half ended after a penalty corner, knocking in a shot by Loehr. It was Marin Samper's 10th goal of the season.

The Lions boosted their lead to 3-1 just 4:59 into the second half as Blake scored her second of the game and 10th of the season off a penalty corner. Christina Freibott and Kyle Marsh tallied assists on both of Blake's penalty corner-goals.

But Hofstra came right back less than two minutes later with Marin Samper knocking in a deflected shot by Loehr for her 11th of the season. The Pride tied the game on a penalty corner with 21:56 to play in regulation as Loehr took a pass from sophomore stopper Colby Hussong and knocked home a shot from near the top of the circle. Marin Samper also received an assist on the insertion pass to Hussong.

Columbia outshot the Pride, 19-16 and had 11 penalty corners to the Pride's nine.

Hofstra returns to action on Friday, October 10 when they travel to Philadelphia to face the Drexel Dragons in a Colonial Athletic Association contest.
