Hempstead, NY - Hofstra Field Hockey player Melissa McCarthy has been voted to the 2013 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)-Capital One Academic All-District 1 Women's At-Large first team, CoSIDA announced Thursday afternoon.

McCarthy (Havertown, PA) will now advance to the women's at-large national ballot along with the first team honorees from the seven other districts. The 2013 CoSIDA-Capital One Academic All-America Division I Women's At-Large Team, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected, will be announced on Thursday, June 6.

The CoSIDA-Capital One Academic All-America women's at-large district nominations can include student-athletes from bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo.

McCarthy, a product of Haverford High School, will graduate this weekend with a dual major in both psychology and early childhood and childhood education. McCarthy is also the 2013 recipient of the Hofstra University Dr. Sylvia J. Giallombardo Award. The award is given annually to Hofstra's top female scholar-athlete. She is the first field hockey player to win the award.

McCarthy started all 19 games on defense for the Pride in 2012 and was third on the team in scoring with four goals and three assists from the back line. Despite taking only six shots all year, she recorded a pair of goals against VCU and also scored against Saint Joseph's and Towson. She led Hofstra with 1,274 minutes played.
