Hempstead, N.Y. – Senior Brittany Farriella scored the equalizer with 7:18 left in regulation as Hofstra earned a point in the standings with a 3-3 draw against William & Mary in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup on Friday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
Freshman goalkeeper Friederike Mehring made seven saves in her first collegiate start as Hofstra moved to 9-5-2 and 3-2-2. The Pride now has 11 points on the season. William & Mary scored three straight goals in the first 14:53 of the second half. The Tribe, which entered the night in a three-way tie for first place, saw its record go to 8-2-5 and 5-1-1.
Sophomore Leah Galton and senior Kerry Cummings scored for Hofstra to stake the Pride to a 2-0 halftime lead. Clara Logsdon, Emory Camper and Dani Rutter all scored in the opening 15 minutes of the second half. Both teams had already clinched a CAA Tournament berth.
Senior Ruby Staplehurst had two assists, including the tying goal and on Cummings' marker. W&M keeper Caroline Casey made 11 saves, including 10 after the break.
Farriella responded by scoring from nearly 10 yards in the 83rd minute. The Lake Grove, N.Y. native notched her third career goal to help Hofstra salvage a tie.
The coldest home game of the season featured a rematch of last year's CAA Tournament semifinal contest. Galton opened the scoring in the 11th minute off a great individual effort. A left-footed shot from near the top of the box was rifled to the upper corner for her seventh goal of the season.
Cummings came off the bench and gave Hofstra the two-goal lead late in the half. Staplehurst's cross was deflected in the box and Cumming scored near the right post in the 40th minute for the 2-0 edge.
William & Mary then stormed back when Logsdon scored off Rutter's cross just 27 seconds into the second half. Camper capitalized on a Hofstra misplay by scoring one-on-one in the 55th minute. Rutter then put the Tribe ahead in the 60th minute off a rebound from Barbara Platenberg's initial shot.
The 3-2 lead held until Farriella scored late. Mehring, who was making her eighth career appearance and first start, made five saves after halftime, including a stop in double overtime, to earn her first career win.
Junior Sam Scolarici, who leads the league with 16 goals, registered a game-high six shots and nearly scored twice. Casey made a great save off a Scolarici header. The Aldie, Va. native nearly found the net again when her head-on shot clashed off the crossbar in the 33rd minute.
Hofstra will next be in action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. home game against James Madison in the regular season finale. The Pride will honor the seniors in a pregame ceremony starting approximately 15 minutes before kickoff.
