WSOC: Hofstra To Play Towson In Road CAA Matchup

Hempstead, N.Y. –  Hofstra will close out a four-game road swing on Sunday when the Pride takes on Towson in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup at 1 p.m. from Tiger Soccer Complex.

Hofstra (8-5-1, 2-2-1 CAA) will be looking to pick up valuable points against a Towson squad that is 7-8-1 and 2-4 in league play. With just six points separating the conference's top-seven teams, the contest will be an important one as Hofstra has just three regular season games remaining and will pit a Pride unit that is tied for fourth with seventh-place Towson. The top six teams out of the nine schools qualify for the CAA Tournament.

Junior Sam Scolarici entered the week tied for fourth in Division I with 14 goals and tied for eighth with 30 points. Towson also enters with one of the league's top forwards in Emily Banes, who also has 30 points to tie Scolarici for the league lead. Scolarici's 2.14 points-per-game average is the conference's best mark with Banes in close second at 1.88.

Towson has lost three of the last four, though the previous two defeats have come by a single goal with a 1-0 road loss at William & Mary and a 2-1 loss at James Madison in double overtime. The game will feature two high-powered offenses. The Hofstra attack leads the league with 32 goals scored while Towson is third with 28 scoring strikes.

Scolarici is taking aim at some of Hofstra's most cherished offensive records. With three regular season games left this season, she is already tied for second for the most single-season goals, trailing only Carlene Wawrzonek's 17 set in 1994. The Aldie, Va. native has 29 career goals, which trails only Suzanne Newell's 36 and Christa Eidenweil's record of 39 set from 1997-00.

Sophomore Leah Galton has showed the play-making skills that earned her CAA Preseason Player of the Year honors by racking up a conference-leading nine assists. She linked with Scolarici for Hofstra's lone goal in a 1-1 draw at Delaware, which kept Scolarici's goal-per-game pace. Galton also scored her sixth goal to account for Hofstra's only offense in a 2-1 loss at Drexel in the previous game.

Hofstra has enjoyed historical success in the all-time meeting, going 15-2-1 against the Tigers. Hofstra has won 10 of the last 11 matchups. Lulu Echeverry, Scolarici and Leah Galton all scored for Hofstra in last year's meeting between the schools that resulted in a 3-1 Hofstra victory that was played at James M. Shuart Stadium.

The Pride leads the league in goals, shots, points and fouls. The defense has shut out four opponents and allowed Hofstra to build a 32-21 goal advantage. Seniors Tara Kerns, Brittany Farriella and Ruby Staplehurst and Caylin Dudley have teamed with sophomore Mallory Ullrich to help make leads stand up. The group will be tested as Towson brings a talented offense led by Banes' 12 goals as well as four-goal scorers Katie Ponce and Katlyn Axenfeld.

Farriella notched her first career assist in 55 games when she helped facilitate Galton's goal against the Dragons.

Three of Hofstra's shutouts have come on the road, where the Pride is 3-3-1. Senior goalkeeper Emily Morphitis is coming off a five-save effort at Drexel and brings a 1.35 goals-against-average into the weekend.
