FH: Pride Fall To JMU, 1-0

9/30/2012 7:08:00 PM

Harrisonburg, VA - Freshman Taylor West scored her first goal of the season early in the first half and classmate Lena Wimmert made seven saves to lead the Dukes of James Madison to a 1-0 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Hofstra Pride at the JHU Field Hockey Complex Sunday afternoon.

Hofstra slips to 5-7 on the season and 0-3 in CAA play while James Madison boosts their record to 7-4 and 2-2 in conference play.

Hofstra, which dominated play outshooting the Dukes 16-3 in the contest and not allowing one penalty corner, was victimized on a fast-break down the right side as freshman Saskia Chelmowski sent a centering pass to West who beat Pride junior goalie Kaitlyn De Turo (South Setauket, NY) at the 9:13 mark of the first half.

The Pride put the pressure on James Madison, taking 11 shots in the first period and making Wimmert make all six of her seven stops in the first half. Hofstra's best scoring opportunity may have come less than a minute before the Dukes scored as JMU freshman Adrienne le Vatte recorded a defensive save on a shot by Pride freshman Lauren del Valle (Exton, PA).

Hofstra continued the pressure in the second half and did not allow the Dukes a shot in the final 35 minutes. But the Pride's five shots in the period required just one save by Wimmert, on a shot by senior Krizia Layne (Arima, Trinidad) at the 46:43 mark.

In addition to having a huge shot advantage, Hofstra, which dropped its fourth consecutive game, took six penalty corners and did not allow one to James Madison.

The Pride return to action next Sunday, October 7 when they travel to Newark, DE to face the Blue Hens of Delaware. Game time for the CAA contest is noon.
