9/21/2012 9:45:00 PM

Hempstead. NY - The Pride jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first half but the Lady Monarchs would score seven unanswered goals as ninth-ranked Old Dominion defeated Hofstra, 7-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association opener at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Friday afternoon.

The Pride slipped to 5-4 overall and 0-1 in the CAA while the Lady Monarchs improved to 5-3 on the year and 1-0 in conference play.

ODU's U.S. Field Hockey Hall of Fame Coach Beth Anders, who will retire at the end of the season after more than 550 victories and nine NCAA national titles, saw her team get down early in the contest as Pride senior midfielder Micaela Gallagher (Port Jefferson, NY) opened the scoring just 13:22 into the contest. Gallagher took a pass from sophomore forward Holly Andrews (Afton, NY) and pushed the ball past ODU goalie Marla Petriello for her fourth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.

Just 59 seconds later, Hofstra made it 2-0 as Gallagher fired a shot to the left side of the goal for her career-best fifth goal of the season, topping her totals of both 2010 and 2011.

But the second goal woke up the Lady Monarchs who got on the board just 1:11 later as part of a four-goal run in the next 17 minutes. Freshman midfielder Sarah Breen, who had a goal and two assists in the contest, scored her fifth goal of the year, off a pass from sophomore Kelsey Smith following a penalty corner at the 15:32 mark. A little more than four minutes later, junior defender Christy Longacre notched her fourth goal of the season, off a pass from Breen following a penalty corner.

ODU sophomore Katy Fuhrman tallied her second goal of the season, off a pass from Breen, on a wind up shot near the right post at the 30:32 mark. The Lady Monarchs ended their first half spurt less than two minutes later as ODU was awarded a penalty stroke with sophomore Lydia Velzian converting it for her second goal of the year and a 4-2 lead at halftime. The Lady Monarchs outshot the Pride, 13-3 in the first half as Petriello did not have to make a save in the ODU goal.

The Lady Monarchs scored three more times in the first 21 minutes of the second half. Sophomore Nicole Goff notched her second of the year off a long pass into the circle at the 39:41 mark. Longacre scored her second of the game and fifth of the season off a rebound in front of the goal at the 43:16 mark. Freshman Celine Marquet closed out the scoring with her second of the season on a redirected Kelsey Smith shot at the 55:30 mark.

ODU outshot Hofstra 15-6 in the second half and 28-9 for the game. Hofstra goalie Kaitlyn De Turo (South Setauket, NY) made nine of her career-high 13 saves in the second half including a penalty stroke. Petriello finished with three saves for the Lady Monarchs.

The Pride return to action on Sunday (Sept. 23) when they host the 20th-ranked Tribe of William and Mary at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Game time is noon.
