9/12/2012 10:45:00 PM

New York, NY - Lauren del Valle and Jonel Boileau scored Pride goals but Columbia scored three second half goals to break a 1-1 halftime deadlock as the Lions defeated Hofstra, 4-2, at the Baker Athletic Complex Wednesday afternoon.

Hofstra, which dropped its second consecutive game, slips to 4-3 on the season while Columbia won its third straight game to improve to 3-2.

The Pride came out of the gate fast and opened the scoring just 3:54 into the contest as freshman Lauren del Valle (Exton, PA) redirected a shot by sophomore Jonel Boileau (Kelowna, BC, Canada) past Columbia goalie Christie O'Hara for her second goal of the year and a 1-0 lead.

The Lions tied the game at the 31:14 mark as senior Katie DeSandis beat Pride junior goal Kaitlyn De Turo (South Setauket, NY) off a pass by Paige Simmons after a penalty corner. It was DeSandis' second goal of the season. Columbia outshot Hofstra, 9-8 in the first half and has three penalty corners to the Pride's two. De Turo made three saves in the first 35 minutes while O'Hara recorded two.

The tie was broken just 2:55 into the second half as Columbia senior Molly Andrews knocked in a rebound off a shot by Paige Simmons for her second goal of the season and a 2-1 lead. Like the Rider game on Sunday, the Pride had five shots over the next 22 minutes but O'Hara posted four saves while the fifth went wide.

Columbia created some breathing room with 7:45 to play when junior Liz Malone scored off a pass from freshman Christina Freibott for a 3-1 advantage. But just 38 seconds later, Boileau brought the Pride back to within one with her eighth goal of the season to cut the gap to 3-2 with 7:07 to play.

But the Lions, once again, extended the lead with 5:47 to play as Katie DeSandis scored her second of the game and third of the season, off a penalty corner, with her twin sister Bridget DeSandis and classmate Paige Simmons assisting on the goal. Columbia outshot Hofstra, 8-7 in the second half.

Hofstra was outshot by Columbia in the contest, 17-15 and the Lions had four penalty corners to the Pride's three. O'Hara finished with six saves in the game while De Turo tallied five saves for the Pride.

The Pride return to action on Sunday, September 16 when they host the Aggies of UC Davis at 1 p.m. at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium.
