VB: Hofstra Sweeps St. Francis (NY)

Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra Volleyball team improved to 5-0 this season as they easily swept St. Francis (NY) on Wednesday evening in Brooklyn Heights, New York.

Set scores were 25-15, 26-24 and 25-13 in favor of the Pride.  Hofstra has now won 15 of the 16 sets it has played in this season.

St. Francis (NY) fell to 0-6 with the loss.

As was the case in the first four matches of the season, sophomore outside hitter Kelsie Wills and junior middle blocker Nikki Kinnier continued to lead the way for the Pride as Wills had a match-high 17 kills, while Kinnier was second with 16.  Wills also added six blocks and four digs, while Kinnier added four digs and three blocks.

The first and third sets were dominating efforts by Hofstra as they won both of those sets by at least 10 points.  The second set featured five tie scores and two lead changes, but the Pride managed to score the final two points of the stanza to earn the narrow victory.

For the match, Hofstra held the Terriers to a .024 hitting percentage, including holding St. Francis (NY) to a negative hitting percentage in the final set.

Senior setter Catalina Charry picked up her first double-double of the year for the Pride in the contest as she led the way with 30 assists and 10 digs.  

Sophomore Emily Burke also had a solid match for Hofstra with nine kills and a .467 hitting percentage.

St. Francis (NY) was led by Maggie Niu and Naomi Flinders, who each tallied four kills.  Kelly O'Halloran dished out 11 assists.

Hofstra returns to action on Friday when it hosts the Hofstra Invitational.  The Pride will first take on Siena on Friday at 7 p.m.  The other two squads taking part in the tournament are Princeton and St. Francis (NY).
