8/24/2012 9:53:00 PM

Hempstead, NY -Pride sophomore Jonel Boileau's second goal of the game 3:21 into the second half broke a 1-1 tie and senior Micaela Gallagher added an insurance goal 18 minutes later as Hofstra (1-0) defeated the Fairfield Stags (0-1), 3-1 in a non-conference game at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Friday afternoon.

Boileau, a native of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, opened the scoring for the 2012 season with an unassisted goal off a rebound in front at the 12:12 mark of the game to give Hofstra a 1-0 lead.

While most of the first half was played in the center third of the field, the Stags of Fairfield were able to knot the game at 1-1 a little over seven minutes later. Following a Fairfield penalty corner, Stag sophomore Felicitas Heinen fired a shot to the left side of Hofstra junior goalie Kaitlyn De Turo (South Setauket, NY) where Fairfield junior Christy Starsinic was camped for the tip-in at the goal mouth. The goal came at the 19:35 mark. Fairfield outshot Hofstra, 6-4 in the first half with De Turo making three of her four saves in the period.

Boileau broke the tie early in the second half, tipping in a pass from the right from freshman Lauren del Valle (Exton, PA) 3:21 into the period for her 10th career goal.

Gallagher (Port Jefferson, NY) gave the Pride some breathing room with 13:44 to play in regulation off a Hofstra penalty corner. Pride senior co-captain Krizia Layne (Arima, Trinidad) inserted the corner to senior defender Melissa McCarthy (Havertown, PA) who stopped the ball and fed Gallagher for a high chip and a 3-1 lead. It was Gallagher's 11th career goal.

Hofstra outshot Fairfield, 10-4 in the second half and 14-10 in the game. De Turo finished with four saves for the Pride while Stag goalie Maddy Sposito also made four saves. Fairfield had eight corners to Hofstra's six. The Pride boosted their series success over Fairfield to 26-4 including wins in the last 10 contests.

Hofstra returns to action on Sunday, August 26 when they host the Hawks of Monmouth University in a non-conference game at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m.
