Philadelphia, PA – JMU junior defender Amy Goldstein scored 1:59 into overtime to give the third-seeded Dukes of James Madison a 3-2 victory over the sixth seed Hofstra Pride in the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship at Buckley Field Friday afternoon.
The Pride end their season with a 7-12 mark while the Dukes, who improved to 11-7 overall, advance to Saturday's semifinal against second seed Northeastern. Fifth seed Delaware, a 3-2 winner over William and Mary in the first quarterfinal Friday, will face top seed Drexel in the other semifinal on Saturday.
Sophomore Jonel Boileau (Kelowna, BC, Canada) and senior Micaela Gallagher (Port Jefferson, NY) scored goals for the Pride, both in the second half, and junior goalie Kaitlyn De Turo (South Setauket, NY) made two saves in the Hofstra goal. JMU received game-tying goals from both junior Rachel Wein and freshman Loes Stijntjes before the game winner in overtime by Goldstein.
The Pride dominated play in the first half, outshooting the Dukes, 8-1 and forcing JMU freshman goalie Lena Wimmert to make four of her five saves in the first half. But the score remained scoreless after 35 minutes.
JMU had the first chance to break the deadlock in the second half at the 39:46 mark on a shot by Wein but Hofstra defender Melissa McCarthy swept the ball away to record a defensive save and keep the game tied. The Pride capitalized on their first opportunity as at the 50:03 mark as senior Codi Nyland (Washington, NJ) sent a long ball into the circle that Jonel Boileau tipped past Wimmert for her 11th goal of the year and a 1-0 lead.
The Dukes picked up their play looking for the equalizer forcing De Turo to make two saves over the next 10 minutes before tying the contest at the 61:24 mark. On that goal, Wein picked up the ball off a scramble on the right side of the cage and slid the ball under DeTuro and into the far side of the goal.
But the Pride came right back just 1:26 later as senior Micaela Gallagher, who was camped out on the left side of the cage, grabbed a rebound of a Boileau shot and stuffed it into the goal for her seventh goal of the season and a 2-1 advantage.
Hofstra looked as if they would be advancing until the final seconds when JMU was given a penalty corner with less than 30 seconds to play. Senior Jenna Taylor inserted the corner to sophomore Dana Allaband who stopped the ball for a blast by freshman Loes Stijntjes that beat De Turo low to tie the game at 2-2 with 20.9 seconds remaining and send the contest into overtime.
The overtime didn't last long as Goldstein made a run along the Hofstra end line, cut inside and slid the ball past De Turo for the game-winner just 1:59 into the extra period.
Hofstra, which was making their eighth CAA Tournament appearance in the last nine years, outshot the Dukes in the game, 13-8 while JMU had three penalty corners to the Pride's one.
