Hempstead, N.Y. - Hofstra will look to ascend the
Colonial Athletic Association standings with two road conference games this
week, starting with a 6 p.m. game at Northeastern on Wednesday. The Pride will
then play Delaware on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Hofstra has won five of the last six games, including
back-to-back 1-0 victories over Georgia State and Towson. The Pride is 9-3-1
overall and 3-2 against the conference.
Strong defense has been the strength of Hofstra recently.
Senior goalkeeper Adam Janowski (Coram, N.Y.) has posted back-to-back shutouts,
which also marks the first two clean sheets of his career. A strong back line
has played well in front of the net with juniors Shaun Foster (Southport,
England) and Tyler Botte (North Babylon, N.Y.) joining senior A.J. Laza (Coram,
N.Y.) to give Hofstra a veteran presence in the defensive third. Hofstra has
not allowed a goal in the last 211:49.
The Pride is 6-10-0 in the all-time series against the Huskies. The series
dates to 1995 when the teams were members of the North Atlantic Conference.
Northeastern (9-1-2, 4-0-1) is unbeaten in the last eight
games, going 6-0-2 in the process. The Huskies have one of the stingiest
defenses in the entire conference, holding opponents to a 0.92 goals per game
to tie for the lowest mark in the CAA.
Opponents have had a difficult time getting the ball past
senior goalkeeper Oliver Blum. The netminder will carry an impressive 0.60
goals-against average into the contest, which leads all other conference
goalies by 20 points. Blum also has a league-leading .833 save percentage.
Northeastern also has a slew of offensive threats, led by
senior forward Don Anding's 22 points in 12 games. Anding entered the week tied
for the league lead in goals with nine and total points.
After facing Northeastern, Hofstra will face another familiar opponent.
The Pride is 13-10-1 in the all-time series against the Fightin' Blue Hens. The
series dates to 1995 when the teams were members of the North Atlantic
Conference.
Delaware (3-8-3, 1-2-2) has struggled to find the net
this season, scoring just 12 goals in 14 games for a 0.86 average. But the Blue
Hens have shown a tenacity late in games, holding a plus-12 shot advantage in
the second half of games this season.
Delaware's Roberto Gimenez is second
in the CAA in total shots with 48. The junior forward is tied with junior
defender Mark Garrity for second on the team with six points. Freshman forward
Joe Dipre is tied for the team lead with three goals and leads all Blue Hens
with seven points.
Hofstra's offense has scored
in key spots. Junior forward Chris Griebsch (Dessau-Rosslau, Germany)became
the first Hofstra player to be named the CAA Player of the Week when he was
named by the league on Oct. 8 after assisting on three of Hofstra's four goals
in a 2-0 week that featured wins over George Mason and Georgia State. Griebsch
was a Co-Player of the Week, sharing the honor with Blum. He then assisted on
sophomore Maid Memic's goal for the only offense in a 1-0 win versus Towson in
the last game.
Griebsch has registered at least one point in four
straight games and his 15 total points trails Memic (Kozarac, Bosnia) by just
one for the team lead. Memic's six goals leads the Pride and is tied for
fifth in the CAA entering the week. He
has four game-winning goals this season.
