Hempstead, NY - Sophomore Jonel Boileau scored in the first half and the Pride defense made the goal stand up as Hofstra defeated 12th-ranked Boston University, 1-0 in a non-conference game at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Pride improved to 6-8 on the season while the Terriers slipped to 9-5.

The victory over number 12 Boston University is the Pride's highest-ranked victory in program history and the program's first win over a ranked opponent since a 3-2 victory over Albany in 2011. Hofstra's previous highest-ranked win was over 13th-ranked William and Mary, 1-0 in the CAA semifinals in 2004.

In a first half highlighted by outstanding defense on both sides, Jonel Boileau (Kelowna, BC, Canada) was able to pick up the ball 40 yards out, carried the ball past the Terriers' defense and went in and beat BU goalie Valentina Cerda Eimbcke low for the 1-0 lead. It was Boileau's 10th goal of the season and second in as many games.

But defense was the name of the game as each team took three shots in the first half with Pride junior goalie Kaitlyn De Turo (South Setauket, NY) making two saves and Cerda Eimbcke making one.

The Terriers picked up their attack in the second half, outshooting Hofstra, 8-4 in the final 35 minutes. But De Turo, who made seven of her nine saves in the contest in the second half, was up to the task. In the 40th minute, BU senior Macey Gaumond had back-to-back shots turned away by De Turo. But the Terrier's best scoring opportunity came with 13:30 to play as Hofstra was whistled for a violation in the circle creating a penalty stroke for BU. But senior Jacinda McLeod partially fanned on the shot sending a slow rolling shot that De Turo easily stopped. Boston University fought to the very end as senior Tabi Hatch fired a shot in the waning seconds that De Turo made a pad save on as time expired.

The Terriers outshot Hofstra, 11-7 in the game and had five penalty corners to the Pride's one, De Turo made nine saves in the Hofstra goal  for her third shutout of the year as the Pride snapped a five-game losing skid.

Hofstra returns to action on Friday, October 19 when they face 10th-ranked Northeastern University, at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, NH, in a key Colonial Athletic Association contest. Game time is 3 p.m.
