9/14/2011 11:04:00 PM

Hempstead, NY - Senior Darrah Rachman and freshman Jonel Boileau each tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Hofstra Pride to a 4-2 non-conference victory over the Columbia Lions at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Wednesday afternoon. Hofstra, which won its second consecutive game and fifth in the last seven outings, improves to 5-4 on the year. Columbia dropped its second straight game to fall to 1-3.

In addition to Rachman (Reading, PA) and Boileau (Kelowna, BC, Canada), the Pride received goals from senior Genna Kovar (Hampton Bays, NY) and junior Krizia Layne (Arima, Trinidad). Senior goalie Amanda Heyde (Somers, NY) tallied nine saves-one off her season high-to record her fifth win of the year. Columbia received goals from junior Gabby Kozlowski and senior Carson Christus while junior Christie O'Hara made 12 saves in the Lions' net.

Columbia got on the scoreboard first at the 20:12 mark as Kozlowski tipped in an Anna Tichy cross in front for her third goal of the year and a 1-0 lead. But the Pride started a run of four consecutive goals 6:11 later as junior Krizia Layne took a pass from Rachman and scored on a spinner from five yards to tie the game. It was Layne's eighth goal of the year as the half ended tied at 1-1. Hofstra outshot the Lions, 14-7 in the period and had eight penalty corners to Columbia's one.

Boileau gave the Pride the lead for good 7:22 into the second half picking up a rebound in front of O'Hara for her third goal of the year. At the 52:10 mark, Rachman tipped in an Arielle Williams pass on the left side for her fourth goal of the season and a 3-1 lead. Kovar closed the Hofstra run with her seventh goal of the year, from Boileau, with 4:06 to play in the contest. The Lions closed the deficit to 4-2 with 2:47 to play on an unassisted goal by Christus, her second of the year.

The big play in the second half may have been when the Pride defense, led by Amy-Lee Levey, staved off a 10-minute penalty in which they played one player short. The Lions did not score during the advantage.

Hofstra outshot Columbia in the game, 27-22, and had 12 penalty corners to the Lions' eight. The Pride return to action on Friday, September 16 when they host the Saints of Siena College at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Game time is 3 p.m.
