FH: Pride Fall To Yale in Home Opener

9/10/2011 8:28:00 PM

Hempstead, NY - The Bulldogs scored the first four goals of the contest and staved off a late Hofstra rally as Yale downed the Pride, 5-3, in a non-conference game at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs improved to 1-2 on the season while Hofstra falls to 3-4.

Eight different players scored the goals in the contest. Yale sophomore goalie Emily Cain recorded 10 saves, including seven in the first half, to post the victory.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring 4:01 into the contest as senior Mia Rosati took a short pass from sophomore Erica Borgo and put the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead. Senior Dinah Landshut boosted the lead at the 28:42 mark, tipping in senior Erin Carter's shot in front. Cain stymied the Pride, who fired 12 shots in the period.

Yale made it 3-0 just one minute into the second half as sophomore Georgia Holland scored her first goal of the year, dribbling in and firing high to beat Hofstra senior netminder Meredith Golden (4 saves), who entered the game after halftime in relief of senior Amanda Heyde (3 saves). Just 4:20 later, Carter scored her second goal of the season on a penalty stroke for a 4-0 advantage.

Hofstra closed the gap almost a minute later when senior Genna Kovar notched her sixth goal of the season on an individual effort in front. Ten minutes later, the Pride made it 4-2 when junior Micaela Gallagher fired a pass to junior Krizia Layne, who tipped the ball into the goal for her sixth tally of the year.

But Borgo gave the Bulldogs some breathing room with her first goal of the season, from sophomore Emily Schuckert, from in front with 15:36 remaining in the second half. Hofstra senior Arielle Williams closed the deficit to 5-3 just 23 seconds later on a scramble in front of Cain for her third goal of the season.

Despite immense Hofstra offensive pressure, the Yale defense stood tall and thwarted every attack in the final 15 minutes for the victory. Hofstra outshot the Bulldogs, 24-17, with each team taking nine penalty corners.

The Pride return to action on Sunday, September 11 when they host the Broncs of Rider University at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m.
