FH: Hofstra Falls In Overtime To No. 20 Stanford

8/27/2011 6:46:00 PM

Storrs, CT - Junior Becky Dru scored three goals and freshman Kelsey Harbin scored 3:29 into the overtime period to give the 20th-ranked Cardinal of Stanford a 4-3 victory over the Hofstra Pride in the second round of the Connecticut Husky Invitational at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex Saturday afternoon. Stanford is 1-0 on the season while Hofstra falls to 2-0.

The Pride had three players score goals as seniors Amy-Lee Levey, Darrah Rachman and Genna Kovar each recorded their first goals of the season. Senior goalkeeper Amanda Heyde recorded 10 saves in the Hofstra net.

Unlike Hofstra's opener on Friday, the first half of Saturday's game was an offensive explosion. The Cardinal jumped out to 2-0 lead on goals off penalty corners by Dru, including her first 36 seconds into the contest from senior Stephanie Byrne and sophomore Hope Burke. Dru's second, also off a penalty corner, came at the 19:05 mark off assists from Byrne and sophomore Colleen Ryan.

But the Pride came right back and tied the game with goals 3:36 apart. Levey scored her first goal of the season, off a rebound, at the 24:05 mark. Rachman then notched her first goal of the year off a pass from senior Arielle Williams to knot the score with 7:19 to play in the first half. But Dru gave the Cardinal a 3-2 lead at halftime with her third goal of the contest off a penalty corner with freshmen Alex McCawley and Shannon Herold setting up the play.

Hofstra tied the game at 3-3 just 1:58 into the second half as Genna Kovar scored an unassisted goal. It was Kovar's 75th career point as a member of the Pride. The Pride's goal was their only shot of the second half as Stanford outshot Hofstra, 12-1 in the second half with Heyde making seven of her 10 saves in the second period.

On the game-winning goal, Heyde made a stop of a McCawley shot but Harbin picked up the rebound and put it into the back of the net to give Stanford the victory. The Cardinal outshot the Pride, 24-10, and had 13 penalty corners to Hofstra's five. Stanford goalie Ale Moss made three saves to post the victory.

The Pride return to action on Wednesday, August 31 when they travel to West Long Branch, New Jersey to face the Hawks of Monmouth University. The non-conference contest starts at 3 p.m.
