10/2/2011 8:24:00 PM

Hempstead, NY - Senior Genna Kovar posted a goal and three assists and junior Krizia Layne added a goal and two assists to lead the Hofstra Pride to a 4-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the James Madison Dukes at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Pride, who won their third consecutive contest, improve to 10-5 on the season and 3-1 in the CAA. James Madison falls to 4-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

Kovar continued her torrid scoring pace Sunday picking up five more points to inch closer to Hofstra's season record for goals and career marks in goals and points while breaking the Pride season mark for assists and points. She has six goals and seven assists in her last three contests to give her 18 goals and 14 assists for 50 points in 2011.

In addition to Kovar, Layne, with her goal and two assists, now has four goals and three assists in her last three games. Seniors Arielle Williams and Amy-Lee Levey scored solo goals for the Pride while senior goalie Amanda Heyde made one save to post her 10th win of the season.

Like last Friday's game against VCU, the Pride scored just once in the first half and led 1-0 at halftime after Levey scored her sixth goal of the year off a penalty corner at the 19:10 mark with Layne, the pusher, and Kovar, the stopper, assisting on the play. The first half was highlighted by solid defensive play as Hofstra outshot the Dukes, 5-2 in the first 35 minutes.

The Pride scored three times in the first 17 minutes of the second half to build a commanding 4-0 lead. Layne notched her 16th goal of the year just 1:23 into the second half, taking a pass from Genna Kovar from the end line and firing a shot, while falling down, past JMU goalie Margo Savage (1 save). Almost 10 minutes later, Williams notched her fifth goal of the year off a penalty corner, with Layne and Kovar assisting. Kovar closed out the Hofstra scoring at the 51:41 mark, on a blast from the top of the circle for her 18th of the season.

The Dukes got on the board with 6:08 to play as freshman Bethany Ashworth scored her first collegiate goal, taking a through-pass and going around Hofstra netminder Amanda Heyde to score. The Pride outshot the Dukes, 11-7 in the contest while each team had eight penalty corners.

Kovar, who broke the Pride's career assist mark on Friday, captured the school's single season points record with her first point on Sunday, breaking Charlia Warner's  45 points in 2006, as well as the season assist mark of 13, set by Lauren Garille and Liz Sturm in 1998, on Levey game-opening goal. Kovar is now two goals shy of tying the school record of 20 in a season, set by Janet Walsh in 1998 and Warner in 2006.  In addition, with 47 goals and 30 assists for 124 points, Kovar is now eight goals away from tying Walsh's career record of 55, and three points from tying Walsh's (1995-98) points mark of 127.

The Pride return to action on Sunday, October 9 when they host the Blue Hens of Delaware in a CAA contest. Game time at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium is noon.
