Hempstead, NY - The "We are Hofstra...We are Leaders" program recognizes the all-around success of select Hofstra University student-athletes.   The key criteria includes excellence in academics, leadership and dedication in athletics, a commitment to community service, and the extent to which they serve as a role model for their peers.

Anissa Whitney is a member of the Volleyball team. Leaving her hometown in Norwood, New Jersey, Anissa knew that she wanted to continue playing on a competitive level which eventually landed her on Hofstra's campus. What surprised her most about this campus was "how absolutely engaging the Speech Communication and Rhetoric Studies department is, and I truly feel that is rare that a department can reach their students in such a way." Due to Anissa's season ending injury last year, she has been able to graduate with her undergraduate degree, begin her graduate studies work, become stronger and ready to compete in this her final season.

QUESTION: Why did you choose to attend Hofstra University?
ANISSA WHITNEY:
I chose Hofstra because it is located by the city which allows for the ultimate college experience simultaneously.  Of course the volleyball team was also another reason to come as I wanted to be a part of a serious legacy and make history of my own.

Q: What has it meant to be a member of the Hofstra women's volleyball team and to play for Coach Kristina Hernandez?

ANISSA: It has meant the world to me.  I have been molded into a better person for being a part of a rich program.  Playing for Coach Hernandez has also pushed me to limits I never thought possible, allowing me to find my composure in uncomfortable/pressure situation and be successful on and off the court.

Q: What has been your most memorable athletic achievement?

ANISSA: When we played Delaware, a conference rival, this year and beat them in three which will always stay with me as a very memorable moment throughout the year.

Q: How did you make your decision on what major to choose?
ANISSA:
While at my previous college, I was advertising major and found that I have a love for moving people through speech so it only came naturally to choose the speech department at Hofstra.

Q: Have you been able to meet any influential people while here at Hofstra?  If so, who and why are they influential in your life?

ANISSA: Mrs. Trasciatti in the Communication department has been quite influential.  I find her thirst and passion for teaching inspiring.  She is one of the reasons I decided to enter the graduate program for Speech Communication.  It is an exciting field that has a plethora of options I can choose from.

Q: What is your definition of a leader?

ANISSA: A leader is a person who can take the reins and follow at any moment.  They also have the ability to inspire and convey a message to their counterparts clearly in order to find a solution.

Q: What kinds of aspirations do you have for playing at the next level, if any?
ANISSA:
I believe any playing I will be doing in the future will be just for fun I really want to get my career going. I plan to work for the creative department in a fashion magazine once I graduate.

Q: What does it take to be a successful student while competing as a Division I student-athlete?
ANISSA:
It takes a lot of discipline, time management skills and determination.  Getting into a routine helps as well, so it becomes second-nature on the tougher days when fatigue sets in to get through the days and still accomplish everything you need.

Q: How has community service involvement positively impacted your development as an individual?
ANISSA:
It has humbled me and given me a more understanding of how fortunate I am to be a student-athlete.  We have so much power that we really do not utilize and community service allows for that to happen. I can honestly say it pushes me to thrive to be a better human being every day.

Q: What piece of advice do you have for incoming student-athletes?
ANISSA:
Take advantage of all Hofstra has to offer you, try not to let a day go by that you did not take steps to improve your life.
