10/16/2011 8:23:00 PM

Hempstead, NY - Junior Zoe Adkins scored on a deflection with 6:13 to play in the game to give the 14th-ranked Black Bears of Maine a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over the Hofstra Pride in a non-conference game at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Sunday. Maine won its third consecutive game to improve to 14-2 on the year. Hofstra, which had its four-game winning streak snapped, slips to 11-6.

The Pride were led by junior Krizia Layne and senior Genna Kovar, with one goal and two assists, while senior Amy-Lee Levey and freshman Jonel Boileau each added solo goals. Hofstra senior goalie Amanda Heyde made 10 saves in the Pride net. The Black Bears of Maine, the top scoring team and the 16th-best defensive team in Division I, were led by sophomore Alexa Binnendijk with two goals, Adkins with a goal and an assist and solo goals from seniors Jocelyn Mitchell and Courtney Glynn. Senior goalie Brittany Fleck needed to make just three saves to post her eighth win of the year.

Hofstra squandered two-goal leads in each half as the Pride jumped out to a 2-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Boileau, off a rebound, at the 11:31 mark, and Kovar's 22nd goal of the year, off a pass from Layne in front, at the 21:12 mark. Boileau started the play on the second goal, sending a pass into the circle to Layne, from the right side.

But the Black Bears got one goal back before halftime, as Glynn deflected senior Kelly Newton's shot past Heyde with 4:44 to play in the half. It was Glynn's fifth goal of the year. Maine outshot the Pride, 16-6 in the first half and had 10 penalty corners to Hofstra's two.

Maine tied the game 2:54 into the second half as Binnendijk notched her 12th goal of the year off a pass from freshman Annabelle Hamilton on the left side of the circle. But the Pride, who were facing immense pressure from the Black Bears in the first five minutes of the second half, came right back and scored goals just 1:43 apart. Levey gave the Pride a 3-2 lead at the 42:03 mark, off a penalty corner with Kovar and Layne assisting. Less than two minutes later, Layne notched her 20th goal of the season, taking a pass on the right side, from a spinning Kovar in front of Fleck, and putting the ball into the empty goal for a 4-2 advantage.

But Maine came back almost 10 minutes later and cut the deficit in half as Binnendijk scored her of the game and 13th of the year, off a pass from Newton following a penalty corner. The Black Bears tied the game with 7:44 to play as Mitchell took a pass across the circle from Adkins and scored from 10 yards out.  Adkins scored the game-winner and her fifth goal of the season, deflecting in Holly Stewart's shot at the left post just 91 seconds later. Maine outshot the Pride, 31-11 and took 18 penalty corners to Hofstra's six.

The Pride return to action on Friday, October 21 when they host Northeastern University in a Colonial Athletic Association contest. Game time for the Senior Day game at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium is 3 p.m.
