Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Seth Tierney today announced five senior
student-athletes who will serve as team captains for the Pride during the 2011
season. Attackmen Stephen Bentz and Jay Card, midfielders Steven DeNapoli and Tim Holman, and defenseman Mike Skudin
have been selected to serve as team leaders. All five are entering their fourth
seasons with the Pride
"The job of the team
captain is almost as important as a coach," Tierney said. "They can pick up a team
when it is struggling and boost the team to greater heights when things are
going well. The five captains are outstanding leaders who give 110 percent day
in and day out and lead by example."
Bentz (Massapequa,
NY) had a breakout year for Hofstra in 2010. Bentz started all 14 games as a
junior and was third on the team in scoring with 29 goals and 12 assists for 41
points. He posted nine multi-goal games last year including a career-high five
goals against Sacred Heart and Towson. Bentz ranked sixth in the CAA in goals
(2.07) and seventh in points (2.93).
Card (Caledon, Ontario, Canada) is a two-time USILA Division I All-America
honorable mention. He is a three-time All-CAA selection earning conference
Player of the Year honors in 2009 and the CAA Rookie of the Year award in
2008. Last season he started 13 games
and tied for the team lead in points with 53 while leading the Pride in assists
with 22. Card ranked seventh in Division I in points per game (4.08), 13
th
in assists (1.69) and 19th in goals (2.38). He tallied 31 goals including
nine multi-goal games and posted a career-high with eight points on five goals
and three assists against Army. Card led
the CAA in assists (1.69), was second in points (4.08) and third in goals
(2.38). Card also served as team captain in 2010.
DeNapoli (Hewlett, NY) played in all 14 games as a junior and has played in all
45 games during his career. Considered one of the top short-stick defensive
middies in the game, he tallied four goals and three assists and led the team
with 49 ground balls last season. DeNapoli, a 2009 All-CAA second team
selection, ranked fifth in the CAA in ground balls (3.50). He was tied for
second on the Pride with 13 caused turnovers. DeNapoli picked up seven ground
balls against Princeton and Brown and six against St. John's and Towson and forced
three turnovers against both Princeton and Brown.
Holman (Garden City, NY) played in all 14 games as a junior and has played in
every game the past two seasons. He tallied two goals and three assists
including two goals and two assists in the NCAA Tournament game at Maryland. He
tied for fourth on the team in ground balls with 32 and picked up five ground
balls against Jacksonville and four against Maryland and Brown. Holman was also
fourth on the team in caused turnovers with 12.
Skudin
(Long Beach, NY) was an All-CAA second team selection last season. He played
and started in all 14 games on defense as a junior and tallied one goal and one
assist on the season. He picked up 29 ground balls including a season-high six
against Jacksonville. Skudin tied for second on the team with 13 caused
turnovers. He has played in 40 games during his Hofstra career.
