FH: Pride Fall at Columbia

9/8/2010 11:06:00 PM

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra sophomore Krizia Layne scored two goals but the Lions of Columbia exploded for four goals in the second half on the way to a 6-2 victory over the Pride in a non-conference game at the Baker Athletic Complex Wednesday afternoon. Columbia improves to 2-0 on the season while Hofstra slips to 2-3.

The Lions jumped on the scoreboard early as sophomore Gabby Kozlowski scored on a straight-on shot from the right just 1:22 into the contest for a 1-0 lead. The Pride tied the game in the 26th minute when senior Nancy Wagenbrenner sent a pass from the left corner to Layne for her second goal of the year. But Columbia took the lead for good in the final minute of the first half when senior Julia Garrison fed Kozlowski who beat Pride goalie Amanda Heyde for her third goal of the season and a 2-1 lead at halftime.

Columbia extended its lead to 3-1 just 13:27 into the second half when sophomore Bridget DeSandis scored her first goal of the year after picking up a blocked shot. Hofstra closed to within one goal at 3-2 with less than 14 minutes to play when senior Diane Caldwell sent a crossing pass to the front of the goal to Layne, who beat Lion's sophomore goalie Christie O'Hara.

But almost four minutes later, Columbia went on a three-goal spurt in a five minute span to blow the game open. First, Kozlowski scored her third of the game on a pass from junior Carson Christus at the 59:51 mark. Almost four minutes later, Garrison notched her second goal of the year, off a penalty corner from seniors Hannah Smith and Caitlin Mullins. Then, just 45 seconds later, freshman Liz Malone boosted the lead to 6-2 on a tip-in off a pass from the top of the circle from junior Leti Freaney.

The Pride outshot Columbia, 15-10, and had 11 penalty corners to the Lions six. O'Hara recorded seven saves in the Columbia goal to post her second win of the season. Pride junior Amanda Heyde made two saves and allowed three goals before being replaced in the 49th minute by red-shirt freshman Kaitlyn De Turo.

Hofstra returns to action on Sunday, September 12 when the Broncs of Rider University visit the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Game time is 2 p.m.
