Hempstead, NY - Senior guard Cornelius Vines (Syracuse, NY) was named the GoHofstra.com Student-Athlete of the Week, it was announced today.
Vines earned the honor after tying the Hofstra school record for most three-pointers in a game, knocking down seven in an 87-70 win over UNC Wilmington on Saturday. The seven three-pointers matched the school record first set by Frank Walker in 1987-88 and matched in 1999-2000 by Jason Hernandez.
Vines also knocked down timely three-pointers in the game as well, as he hit three straight shots from behind the arc in a span of 1:03 to break the game open. UNC Wilmington had cut a 14-point Hofstra lead down to four points (56-52), before Vines went on a personal 9-0 run in a span of just over a minute to put Hofstra back ahead by 13.
The seven three-pointer barrage also gave Vines 113 in his Hofstra career, ranking him 14th in school history despite only playing two seasons after transferring from Iowa Lakes Community College. His 72 three-pointers last year rank as the eighth highest single-season total at Hofstra.
Vines finished the UNC Wilmington game with 24 points, breaking his previous career-high of 23 points, set last year against Delaware.
