WSOC: Bergstrom, Yovino Named First Team Academic All-District

11/2/2010 7:42:00 PM

Hempstead, N.Y. - Senior defender Dana Bergstrom (Billerica, Mass./Lexington Christian) and senior midfielder Tiffany Yovino (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) were named to the Academic All-District 1 first team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), it was announced today.

Both Bergstrom and Yovino will be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, which will be announced later this month. Bergstrom was named first-team all-district for the second year in a row, while Yovino was chosen to the first team this season after earning second-team honors in each of the last two years.

Bergstrom carries a perfect 4.0 GPA as an exercise science major in her four semesters at Hofstra after transferring from Syracuse following her freshman year. On the field, she leads Hofstra (and is tied for the lead in the CAA) with 10 assists, which is tied for the second highest single-season total in school history (two shy of the record). She tied the single-game school record with three assists against George Mason on Oct. 10, and is part of a defensive back four that is allowing its opponents only three shots on goal per game.

Yovino, meanwhile, carries a 3.74 GPA with a dual major in history and early childhood education and was named to the National Scholar All-America team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) last year. She leads Hofstra and the CAA with 11 goals this season, including at least one goal in each of her last eight games. She also had a pair of two-goal games in that span, including the game-winner with 45 seconds left in an Oct. 15 win over William & Mary, and the tying and winning goals in a 2-1 comeback win over Northeastern on Oct. 30.

Bergstrom and Yovino have been key parts of a Hofstra team which finished the regular season with a 17-1 record, including 17 straight wins after a season-opening defeat. The Pride is currently ranked No. 18 in the nation by the NSCAA and finished 11-0 in the CAA this year, becoming the first CAA team to go unbeaten and untied in league play since William & Mary in 1998 (8-0).

Hofstra will next be in action when it hosts the CAA Tournament this weekend, beginning with a semifinal game against Georgia State on Friday at 7 p.m. James Madison and George Mason play in the first semifinal at 4:30 p.m., while the two semifinal winners meet on Sunday at 1 p.m. for the conference championship and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
