VA - Amy Daniel and Becky Hilgar each scored two goals and sophomore goalie
Margo Savage made five saves to lead the Dukes of James Madison University to a
8-0 CAA victory over the Hofstra Pride at the JMU Field Hockey Complex Friday
night. The Dukes, who won their fourth straight contest, improve to 7-5 overall
and 3-0 in conference play while Hofstra, which dropped its third consecutive
game, falls to 5-6 overall and 0-2 in the CAA.
James Madison scored
three times in the first half and five times in the second to post its fifth
consecutive victory over the Pride. The Dukes opened the scoring 10:07 into the
contest when sophomore Ann Taylor found senior Delores de Rooji on the left for
her sixth goal of the season. Less than two minutes later, Hofstra graduate
student Diane Caldwell had one of the Pride's best scoring attempts thwarted on
a defensive save by sophomore Sam Smiertka.
The Dukes made it 2-0 in the 20th minute as freshman Lise van Dam tipped in a
shot from outside the circle by freshman Amy Goldstein. It was van Dam's first
goal of the year. Almost five minutes later, Daniel scored her first of the
game and 13th of the season off a penalty corner with junior Lindsay Cutchins
as the pusher and senior Melissa McNelis as the stopper assisting.
The Pride put the pressure on the Dukes in the first five minutes of the second
half but had two shots stopped by Savage and a third blocked by the defense. JMU
settled down and boosted its lead to 4-0 in the 16th minute of the second half
on Daniel's second goal off a penalty corner with Cutchins and McNelis
assisting again. In the 59th minute, Cutchins notched her fifth goal of the
season off a rebound off the post of a Daniel shot for a 5-0 advantage.
The Dukes scored their final three goals in a 4:39 span as sophomore Tori
Lindsey scored off a centering pass from the right by Hilgar and then Hilgar
scored consecutive goals, off assists from Daniel and freshman Rachel Wein, in
the 64th and 66th minutes, respectively, to close out the scoring.
Hofstra junior goalie Amanda Heyde, who posted double-digit saves for the third
straight contest, stopped 10 shots in the Pride goal. James Madison outshot
Hofstra, 31-13, with the Pride holding the advantage in penalty corners, 7-5.
The Pride return to
action on Sunday (Oct. 3) in Richmond when they face the Rams of Virginia
Commonwealth at Cary Street Field at Noon.
