HOFSTRA DEFEATED BY BINGHAMTON

Hempstead, NY - In early action on Saturday at the 2009 Hofstra/Asics Invitational, Marshall moved to 2-0 on the young season as they defeated Rhode Island while the host Pride dropped a three-set match to Binghamton. 

Binghamton defeated Hofstra, 25-21, 25-22, 25-22, and evened its record at 1-1, while the Pride slipped to 0-2 to start the 2009 campaign.  In the earlier contest, Marshall earned a 25-21, 21-25, 25-17, 25-21 over Rhode Island, dropping the Rams record to 1-1 this year.

Senior outside hitter Monica Knight once again led Hofstra offensively as she tallied a match-high 15 kills and also chipped in with eight digs.  Senior setter Chrissey Cruz led the Pride with 17 digs and also added 15 assists, sharing the setting duties with junior setter Rachel August (12 assists, five digs).

Anna Lejina led the Bearcats with 10 kills, while Brianna Stong posted a match-high 18 digs for the Bearcats and Lindsey Mueller tallied 28 assists.

In the Marshall-Rhode Island match, Elizabeth Herman had 19 kills, seven digs and four blocks to lead the Thundering Herd to the four-set victory.  She was joined offensively by Emily Sullivan's 17 kills and Kristin Marcum's 12 kills.  Marcum also tied Ryanne Milligan for team-high honors with 19 digs.  Elizabeth Fleming had 50 assists and 11 digs for Marshall as well.

Rhode Island had a very balanced attack in the match as six different players had at least six kills, led by Lindsay Potts' nine.  Kalyn Klaess picked up a match-high 20 digs, while Candice Kolkka had 20 assists to lead the way.

The 2009 Hofstra/Asics Invitational concludes this evening as Binghamton will take on Rhode Island at 5 p.m. before Hofstra and Marshall close the tournament with a 7 p.m. match.
