Hempstead, NY - Hofstra University midfielder Anthony Muscarella was selected by the Long Island Lizards in the fourth round of the 2009 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft, the MLL announced Wednesday night.
The Wantagh, New York native was the 29th overall pick and the third selection of the fourth round in the MLL's ninth annual collegiate draft. Muscarella, who became the 14th player in Hofstra history to be selected in the MLL Draft, was a USILA All-America honorable mention in 2008 and 2009. He played in 14 games for the Pride this past season and was second on the team in goals with 19 and assists with nine, and third in points with 28. Muscarella recorded 10 multi-point contests including four goals at Towson on April 11. He ranked ninth in the CAA in points average with a 2.0 mark.
Muscarella, who played in last week's USILA North-South Senior All-Star Game in Boston, played in 60 games during his Hofstra career and tallied 63 goals and 25 assists for 88 points.
2009 marks the fifth consecutive year and the seventh time in nine years that the Pride has at least one student-athlete selected in the MLL Collegiate Draft. In 2006 Hofstra had a single-draft high of five players chosen in the MLL Draft.
Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premiere professional outdoor lacrosse league, commenced play in June of 2001. The MLL is comprised of six teams located in Boston, Chicago, Denver, Long Island, Toronto, and Washington. The ninth season of MLL action is slated to begin May 15, 2009. The 2009 MLL All-Star Game will take place on Thursday, July 16 in Denver, Colorado at INVESCO Field at Mile High. The season will culminate with the New Balance MLL Championship Weekend, which will take place on Saturday and Sunday, August 22 and 23 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland.
