HOFSTRA ADVANCES TO QUARTERFINALS WITH WIN OVER UNC WILMINGTON

3/6/2009 8:00:00 PM

Sophomore guard Charles Jenkins (Queens, NY) had 27 points and nine assists and sophomore forward Greg Washington (Centereach, NY - pictured) added a career-high 14 points, 12 rebounds, and broke Hofstra's single season record for blocked shots as the Hofstra Men's Basketball team captured a 79-66 win over UNC Wilmington in the opening round of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament on Friday afternoon at the Richmond Coliseum.

With the win, the fifth-seeded Pride improves to 21-10 overall and moves on the quarterfinals on Saturday, when it will take on fourth-seeded Old Dominion at 2:30 p.m. (MSG+ 2 TV). UNC Wilmington ends its season at 7-25.

Washington finished with three blocks, giving him 67 on the season, breaking the single-season record of 66 set by Adrian Uter in 2005-06.

Hofstra controlled the game most of the way, using a 15-2 run to turn a 14-11 lead into a 29-13 advantage with 8:35 left in the opening half. UNC Wilmington pulled back within 39-29 at the half, and used a quick spurt to get back within six points at 41-35 on two foul shots from sophomore forward Dominique Lacy.

Jenkins, though, responded with two baskets, then fed Washington for a jumper and capped off an 8-0 run with another basket of his own to stretch the lead up to 49-35. Hofstra held a double-digit lead most of the way from there, stretching it to as many as 67-50 on a Jenkins jumper with 6:17 left. UNC Wilmington had one last spurt as Johnny Wolf hit two three-pointers and Chad Tomko added one during a 10-4 Seahawk run that made the score 71-60 with 4:21 to play.

However, Jenkins shot 8-8 from the foul line in the last five minutes to help keep the Seahawks at bay, as UNC Wilmington was unable to get the lead back down to double figures.

Wolf led UNC Wilmington with 22 points, but the Hofstra defense held the Seahawks to just 31.6 percent shooting on the day, while shooting 52.7 percent itself. Junior guard Cornelius Vines (Syracuse, NY) chipped in with 13 points, and sophomore guard Nathaniel Lester (Brooklyn, NY) added 10 to give the Pride four players in double figures.

Hofstra and Old Dominion met once this season at Hofstra, with the Pride capturing a 60-51 win at the Mack Sports Complex on Feb. 10. The teams have met three times in the postseason, with Old Dominion winning all three (the 2004 CAA quarterfinals, the 2005 CAA semifinals, and the 2006 NIT quarterfinals).
