JENKINS NAMED CAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK

12/7/2009 7:00:00 PM

Hempstead, NY - Junior guard Charles Jenkins (Queens, NY) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced today by the conference office.

Jenkins averaged 29.5 points on 63.3 percent shooting from the floor last week in helping the Pride to a pair of wins, an 84-80 victory over Fairfield on Monday and an 84-64 win over Towson in the CAA opener on Saturday. It was the first time that Hofstra has scored at least 84 points in back-to-back regulation games since 1999-2000 (84 points in a win over Towson, followed by 86 points in a win over Vermont).

In the Fairfield win, Jenkins set a career-high with 38 points as he helped Hofstra pull out an 84-80 victory. The 38 points passed his previous high of 35 set in the regular season finale last year against UNC Wilmington (an 88-81 overtime win). He shot 12-17 from the floor and 9-9 from the foul line, while also setting a new career high with five three-pointers, the last of which gave Hofstra a five-point lead with 1:20 to play. He had 26 of his 38 points against the Stags in the second half alone.

Jenkins followed up that performance with 21 points on 7-13 shooting in the win over Towson to help the Pride start off its conference season 1-0. He also knocked down two of his four three-point attempts, capping off a week in which he shot 7-11 from behind the arc (63.6 percent).

For the season, Jenkins is averaging 20.9 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists. He is currently one of only four players in the nation averaging at least 20 points, four rebounds and four assists. The others are Keion Bell of Pepperdine, Manny Harris of Michigan and Jerome Dyson of Connecticut.

The Player of the Week honor marks the eighth time in his career that Jenkins has been honored by the CAA. He was a three-time Player of the Week last season, and earned the Rookie of the Week honor four times as a freshman in 2007-08. He also becomes the second Hofstra player to earn CAA honors this season, as freshman forward Halil Kanacevic (Staten Island, NY) was named the Rookie of the Week on Nov. 23. Jenkins was also the CAA Rookie of the Year in 2007-08, a first-team All-CAA selection last year, and the CAA Preseason Co-Player of the Year this winter.

Hofstra will next be in action when it hosts Manhattan on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. contest. The game will be televised live by the FiOS1 Network.
