HOFSTRA TO HONOR 2007 CAA CHAMPIONS, CRYSTAL BOYD

2/1/2008 3:00:00 PM

The 2007 Colonial Athletic Association champion Hofstra Softball team will be honored at halftime of the Pride's men's basketball game against Georgia State on Feb. 9, while former player Crystal Boyd (1991-94) will be honored at halftime as well for the official retirement of her jersey number (13).

The Hofstra Softball team captured the 2007 CAA championship with a 3-1 win over Georgia State at Hofstra Softball Stadium. It marked the program's 10th conference championship in a row, including all six since it joined the CAA in 2002. The Pride also won the final four conference titles it participated in while members of the America East Conference from 1998-2001.

The 10th straight title made Hofstra the first NCAA Division I softball program to ever win 10 conference championships in a row. Massachusetts held the previous standard of nine straight Atlantic 10 Conference titles from 1995-2003. Hofstra has also now won either a regular season or a postseason conference championship in each of the last 16 years.

Boyd will become the first Hofstra Softball player to ever have her jersey number retired. She graduated in 1994  with her name all over the Pride record books, including records that she still holds for highest batting average in a season (.514), most hits in a season (80), most doubles in a season (21), most triples in a season (10), and career records for doubles (68) and triples (29).

Boyd was a two-time All-American at Hofstra (1993, 1994), the first in program history. She was also a three-time Academic All-American for the Pride and earned All-Region honors in each of her four seasons. In addition, Boyd helped guide Hofstra to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 1993.

Tip-off for the Hofstra-Georgia State Men's Basketball game is at 4 p.m. For ticket information, contact the Hofstra Box Office at (516) HOF-TIXX (463-8499).
