HOFSTRA FALLS TO #7 JMU

10/5/2008 4:00:00 PM

Junior forward Kristin Thompson (Santa Cruz, Trinidad) registered the first two-goal game of her career, but it wasn't enough as the Pride dropped a 7-3 decision to No. 7 James Madison University in a CAA matchup Sunday afternoon at JMU Field Hockey Complex.

Freshman goalkeeper Amanda Heyde (Yorktown Heights, NY) made 11 saves against the nationally ranked opponent, though Hofstra's record fell to 7-3 and 1-2 against the conference. Lauren Walls scored two goals for the Dukes, who improved to 10-1 and 4-0 against the CAA.

Charlia Warner (Bridgetown, Barbados) opened the scoring just 6:39 into the contest, notching her team-leading ninth goal off a penalty corner. Amy-Lee Levey, who tallied a goal and an assist in the Pride's victory over VCU Friday, took Reyna Farnum's initial pass and set up Warner's shot for a quick 1-0 lead.

James Madison stormed back with three consecutive goals. Walls banked home a rebound attempt, tying it at 1 at the 15:16 mark. Nearly nine minutes later, Dolores de Rooij pushed Randi Segear's pass into the net, providing the Dukes a lead it would not relinquish.

Melisa Stefaniak's shot from 10 yards out put JMU up 3-1 with 6:55 left in the first half. Thompson gave Hofstra hope just 1:22 later, redirecting a penalty shot off Brit Blankmeyer's pass.

But the Dukes seized all the momentum before halftime. Stefaniak and Ashley Walls added goals in the final minute as JMU headed into the break up 5-2.

James Madison goalkeeper Kelsey Cutchins did not need to make a single save. Hofstra scored on all three of its shots on goal, including Thompson's second goal 13:44 into the second half. The Dukes out-shot the Pride, 34-6, and received insurance markers from Lauren Walls and Meghan Bain.

Hofstra returns home Friday when it hosts Old Dominion University. Game time at Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium is set for 3 p.m.
