Katelyn Smither and Kathleen Shea scored goals 2:48 apart in the first half, providing the only offense as Old Dominion defeated the Pride, 2-0, in a CAA matchup at Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Friday afternoon.
Charlia Warner (Bridgetown, Barbados) posted a game-high five shots for Hofstra. But the Pride still fell to 7-4 overall and 1-3 against the conference. ODU goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll made seven saves as the Monarchs improved to 6-6 and 4-0.
Goalkeeper Amanda Heyde (Yorktown Heights, NY) recorded six saves for the Pride. The freshman netminder started strong, stopping Hanna Warren's shot off a penalty corner. Smither converted the long rebound, giving ODU a 1-0 lead 27:13 into the first half.
Shea gave the Monarchs a cushion nearly three minutes later, taking Warren's pass and blasting a shot in off a penalty corner for the two-goal edge.
The Pride tried to start a late rally, out-shooting ODU, 8-3, in the second half. Driscoll preserved the lead, turning aside all three shots on goal she faced in the final 21 minutes to secure the shutout.
Hofstra will be back in action Sunday when it hosts CAA-rival William & Mary. The game was originally scheduled to be held at Columbia, but will now be held at Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Game time is at noon.
