THREE HOFSTRA ALUMS SELECTED IN THE NATIONAL LACROSSE LEAGUE DRAFT

9/14/2006 6:00:00 PM

Three Hofstra University men's lacrosse All-Americans from last season were selected in the 2006 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft at The Theater at Madison Square Garden Wednesday night.

Attackman Athan Iannucci was selected in the first round with the eighth pick by the Philadelphia Wings, defender John Orsen was the first pick in the fourth round, the 39th selection overall, by the New York Titans, and attackman Chris Unterstein was the first pick in the sixth round, the 65th overall choice, by New York.

Iannucci (Coquitlam, BC, Canada), who saw his college career come to a close earlier this week when Hofstra's waiver appeal for eligibility in 2007 was denied by the NCAA, tallied 62 goals and 18 assists and led the nation in goals per game in 2006. He received his first All-America honor with a selection to the second team in 2006. The two-time All-Colonial Athletic Association first team selection was also named the 2006 CAA Championship Tournament Most Valuable Player after leading the Pride to their first CAA title. Iannucci, who played box lacrosse in Canada, concluded his three-year Hofstra career with 105 goals and 42 assists in 48 games.

Orsen (Laurel Hollow, NY), an honorable mention All-American last season, was a first team All-CAA selection in 2006. He was second on the team in both ground balls, with 75, and forced turnovers, with 17, while recording one goal and two assists. The 6'3" Long Island native, one of the four captains on last year's team, was the vocal and inspirational leader of the Pride in 2006. Orsen was also selected in the fourth round of the Major League Lacrosse College Draft in June, with the 40th pick overall, by the Long Island Lizards.

Unterstein (Shoreham, NY), a first team All-America selection, the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year and a USILA Scholar All-American in 2006, tallied 45 goals and 36 assists for the 17-2 Pride last season. The three-time all-conference selection was also one of five finalists for the Tewaaraton Trophy as the college lacrosse player of the year. Unterstein, who was selected with the eighth pick in the first round by the Rochester Rattlers in the MLL Draft in June, became the first Hofstra player selected in the first round of the MLL Collegiate Draft since defender Nicky Polanco and attackman Tom Kessler were chosen in 2002. He finished his four-year Hofstra career with 87 goals, 79 assists and 118 ground balls in 66 games.
