1/21/2006 12:00:00 PM

Senior guards Jose Juan Barea (29) and Aaron Davis (21) combined for 50 points to offset a career-high 32 points from junior guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) and lead the Northeastern men's basketball team to an 89-73 win over Hofstra Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena.

With the loss, the Pride slips to 12-4 on the season and 5-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Northeastern, meanwhile, improves to 10-7 overall and 6-3 in league play.

Hofstra took a 42-34 lead into halftime, but Northeastern exploded for a 22-7 run in the first 5:15 of the second half to take a 56-49 lead. Davis scored 10 points during the run, capping it off with a three-pointer off a kick-out pass from Barea.

Northeastern then built the lead up to 10 points at 61-51 on another Davis three-pointer with 13:03 left. Hofstra had one final spurt to cut the lead to four points a three-pointer from sophomore guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) with 10:47 to play, but Barea scored eight points during a 13-4 run that stretched the lead back up to 76-63 and seal the win.

Stokes' 32 points broke his previous high of 31, set in the CAA quarterfinals against Drexel last season. It was also his third straight game with at least 25 points, the first player to accomplish that feat at Hofstra since Speedy Claxton during the 1999-2000 season. Senior forward Aurimas Kieza (Marijampole, Lithuania) had his second straight double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Barea, who leads the nation in assists, added 10 on the day, while sophomore forward Shawn James added 12 points, nine rebounds and 10 blocked shots. Davis shot 8-11 from the floor and 5-7 from three-point territory to finish with 21 points for Northeastern, which scored 55 points in the second half on 19-30 shooting.

The first half was a see-saw affair with neither team leading by more than four points until the Pride went on a 9-2 run to turn a 20-20 tie into a 29-22 advantage with 7:01 to play on a Stokes fast break lay-up. Northeastern answered back  as Barea fed junior guard Bobby Kelly for a three-pointer, then scored five straight points to pull the Huskies within 32-30. However, Stokes responded by scoring six points during a 10-4 run to end the half as the Pride took a 42-34 lead into intermission.

Hofstra will next be in action when it entertains Towson on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Hofstra Arena. Towson defeated the Pride in the first meeting in Towson by a 94-91 score, the highest-scoring game that the Pride has been involved in during the last 10 years.
