NUTTALL NAMED REGIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR

12/20/2005 12:00:00 PM

Hofstra Men's Soccer Coach Richard Nuttall was named one of eight Division I Men's Soccer Regional Coaches of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), it was announced this week.

Nuttall earned the New York Region Coach of the Year Award after leading Hofstra to a 14-5-3 record in 2005. The Pride also earned a Colonial Athletic Association championship and a #13 ranking in the final NSCAA poll, the highest ranking in the program's history. The CAA title was the second in a row for the Pride and earned it its second straight NCAA Division I Tournament berth, when it hosted an opening round game against Providence.

The Pride's 2004 bid was the program's first in 32 years at the NCAA Division I level, when it made a surprising run as the fifth seed in the CAA Tournament to the conference championship. This year, Hofstra finished the regular season in second place in the CAA standings with a 7-2-2 league mark, and captured its second straight title after defeating #7 ranked Old Dominion 1-0 in the CAA Championship game on Nov. 11 on a dramatic goal with eight seconds left in regulation. Old Dominion was the highest-ranked team that Hofstra has ever defeated.

Nuttall completed his 16th season as the Pride's head coach this fall, and has guided the program to a 159-142-30 mark during that time. He has twice led Hofstra to 14-win seasons, the most that the program has ever earned at the NCAA Division I level. He also led the Pride to a 14-4-3 record in 1997, when it finished the regular season undefeated and untied in the America East Conference (9-0).

The Hofstra Men's Soccer and Women's progams both won Colonial Athletic Association titles this fall, making Hofstra one of only four schools in the nation to earn conference championships in both sports.
