10/23/2005 12:00:00 PM

The Hofstra Field Hockey Team played their hearts out against seventh-ranked Old Dominion, but was unable to hold off the Lady Monarchs in a 1-0 loss at Shuart Stadium Sunday afternoon.  With the loss the Pride fall to 11-5 overall and 4-2 in the CAA, while ODU improves to 13-5 overall and 7-0 in CAA.

Both teams came out aggressive, but Old Dominion scored the contest's lone goal as senior defender Janelle Engle fired a shot passed Pride goalie Jessica Cowperthwait.   The goal came off the Lady Monarch's second penalty corner of the game.  It was assisted by junior midfielders Dana Sensenig and Katelyn Smither.

Just before the half the Pride had a corner and junior midfielder Leslie DeSimone appeared to have her sixth goal of the season.  But a foul was called, and the half ended with the score 1-0 in favor of Old Dominion.  At the half ODU had five shots, while Hofstra had two.  Both teams recorded three penalty corners.

About 15 minutes into the second half Hofstra had back-to-back plays in which it appeared to score, but both goals were called back for being shot outside the circle.  The Pride defense continued to keep the game close, with especially strong play by senior defender Katherine Kotowski.

Hofstra had one final chance to score when it was awarded a penalty corner at the end of regulation, but were unable to convert. ODU outshot Hofstra for the contest, 9-2.  The Pride recorded six penalty corners and four saves, while the Lady Monarchs had seven penalty corners and one save.

The Pride is back in action on Friday, October 28 when they travel to James Madison to battle the Dukes at 7 p.m., in Harrisonburg, VA.  Then on Sunday, October 30 Hofstra will play its last regular season game against the Rams of VCU, with the game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Richmond, VA.
