AGUDIO WINS FOURTH ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

12/20/2004 3:00:00 PM

Redshirt freshman guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman High School) was named the CAA Rookie of the Week for the fourth time in five weeks this season, it was announced today by the league office.

Agudio scored 15 points in the Pride's only game last week, a 75-57 win over Dartmouth on Friday. It was the second straight honor for Agudio, and the fourth in the first five weeks of the regular season. The four Rookie of the Week Awards already breaks the CAA record for an entire year, surpassing the previous high of three, which had been accomplished by three players.

For the season, Agudio ranks second on the Pride and third in the entire CAA with 17.0 points per game. He is also second in the CAA in three-pointers made (2.9 per game) and sixth in three-point percentage (.444). He has scored at least 13 points with at least one three-pointer in each of his first seven collegiate games.

Agudio's efforts have helped the Pride start the year 7-0, its best-ever start in 32 years at the NCAA Division I level. The last time Hofstra began a season with seven straight wins was in 1960-61 in the NCAA Small College Division, when it started out 10-0. The previous high at the Division I level was 6-0 back in 1982-83.

Hofstra and Agudio will put their undefeated record to the test when they entertain 6-1 Columbia on Wednesday evening for a 7 p.m. contest. That game will reunite Hofstra Head Coach Tom Pecora with Columbia Head Coach Joe Jones. Pecora and Jones were assistants together at Hofstra from 1994-97 under Jay Wright.
