Junior forward Aurmias Kieza (Marijampole, Lithuania - pictured) hit five second-half three-pointers, and freshman guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) added four first-half threes as the Hofstra Men's Basketball team captured a 76-63 road win at Binghamton on Saturday.
With the win, the Pride improves to 3-0 on the young season, the first time it has started out a season 3-0 since the 2000-01 team began the year 4-0. That team went on to finish with a 26-5 overall record and an America East Conference championship. Binghamton, meanwhile, slips to 1-3 with the loss.
Hofstra trailed 14-5 early, but Agudio's hot shooting got the Pride right back in. Agudio scored 14 of Hofstra's first 22 points, including 4-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc. His last shot during the stretch, a running jumper in the lane, pulled the Pride within 24-22.
After Binghamton went ahead 28-22, the Pride answered back with a 12-0 run, capped off by back-to-back lay-ups from junior forward Adrian Uter (Queens, NY). Binghamton closed to within 34-31 at the break, but Hofstra quickly stretched the lead out to double digits in the second half. Back-to-back threes from Kieza on consecutive possessions pushed the Pride advantage to 47-35, and Binghamton could come no closer than seven the rest of the way.
Agudio finished with a game-high 22 points, eclipsing his personal best of 20 set in his college debut at Florida International on Sunday, Nov. 21. Kieza added 19 points, 17 of which came in the second half, his second straight big second-half performance. He also had 15 of his 17 points after intermission in the Pride's 79-69 home win over La Salle on Wednesday. Sophomore guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) added 18 points and nine rebounds, his 18th straight game in double figures dating back to last season. Uter added 10 points to give the Pride four players in double figures.
Hofstra will next be in action when it takes on Columbia at Hofstra Arena on Wednesday at 7 p.m. That game will reunite Hofstra Head Coach Tom Pecora and Columbia Head Coach Joe Jones, who were assistants together at Hofstra from 1994-97. The two coaches went against each other last year for the first time at Columbia, with the Pride prevailing 58-55 on a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Carlos Rivera (San German, PR).
