JANTZEN SCORES GAME-WINNER AS PRIDE DEFEATS BROWN

HEMPSTEAD, New York ?“ The Hofstra Field Hockey team defeated Brown University, 2-1 on Saturday, September 6 at James M. Shuart Stadium.  Junior Kathryn Sergi and freshman Doni-Melissa Jantzen recorded goals for Hofstra improves to (3-0) and Brown falls to (0-1).

Sergi gave the Pride an early 1-0 lead scoring just two minutes into the game on a penalty corner.  Sergi blasted a shot past Brown goalie Kathryn Noe, and was assisted by junior Sara Gonzalez and freshman Sekayi Liburd.  The Bears came right back as Meaghan Harwood tied the game on an unassisted goal two yards out on a scramble at 30:07 in the first half. 

Jantzen knocked in what proved to be the game-winning goal at 9:14 of the first.  Sophomore Katherine Kotowski brought the ball down the right sideline and passed off to Jantzen who tallied her first collegiate goal from three yards out.  The second half was scoreless as the two goalies combined for six saves.

Hofstra freshman goalkeeper Jessica Cowperthwait had eight saves in the victory, while Brown goalie Noe recorded three saves.  The Pride totaled nine penalty corners, while the Bears tallied five. 

The Hofstra Field Hockey team is back in action against Monmouth University at Shuart Stadium tomorrow at 1 p.m.
