HEMPSTEAD, New York - Senior Joe Kostolansky recorded a game-high two goals and three assists and senior Jim Femminella added three goals as the Hofstra Pride defeated the Binghamton Bearcats 15-5 in a non-conference game at Shuart Stadium Tuesday night. The 19th-ranked Pride evened their record at 1-1 on the season while Binghamton fell to 1-2.
Five different players scored goals for Binghamton but Hofstra posted its 18th consecutive victory over an unranked opponent.
The Pride scored the first six goals of the game, with six different players denting the twine. Kostolansky opened the scoring just 1:26 into the contest with his second of the season. Junior Keith Mekeel tallied his first of two goals on the night 1:44 with an unassisted goal. Red-shirt freshman Ryan Lucas scored a man-up goal, the first score of his career, off a pass from Kostolansky 58 seconds later and then Kostolansky fed Feminella with 6:15 to play in the quarter for his second goal of the season and a 4-0 lead. Jeremy Kyrkostas posted an unassisted goal with 5:09 to play and Don Scott, a transfer from Johns Hopkins, ended the Hofstra run with his first of two goals off a pass from Tim Treubig to boost the lead to 6-0.
Charlie Cook put the Bearcats on the board with an unassisted goal with 3:38 to play and then Brian Morgan closed the gap to 6-2 off a pass from Brian Chaapel just 1:41 from the end of the period. But any thoughts of a Binghamton comeback were denied as Hofstra scored the next six goals-three in the second period and three in the third-to boost the lead to 12-2 just 3:48 into the period. Hofstra senior middie Ryan O'Donnell tallied two goals in the spurt.
Hofstra dominated the stat sheet, outshooting the Bearcats 50-25, and picking up 51 ground balls to Binghamton's 29. Matt Southard and Steve Izzo combined to post 15 saves in the Hofstra cage.
The Pride will host Cornell University on Saturday, March 8th at 1:30 p.m. at James M. Shuart Stadium.
