Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra field hockey team fought back against a 2-0 deficit, but the Pride ended up falling short in a 2-1 home loss to Providence Sunday afternoon from Cindy Lewis Stadium. Hofstra now sits at 2-3 on the season, while the win improves Providence to 5-1.
The Friars took a 1-0 lead 1:42 into the contest, and the guests doubled their lead with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter. As time winded down in the third quarter,
Greta Krimmel latched onto a loose ball near the endline and found a streaking
Sarah Smalley, who flicked her shot into the back of the net just before the buzzer sounded, putting Hofstra down by one going into the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, despite holding a 3-1 shot advantage and playing with an extra attacker for the final 3:10, Hofstra was unable to find the tying goal before the clock hit zero.
Smalley's goal was her fourth of the season, while Krimmel recorded the first point of her college career with the assist, and
Luci Hollister totaled five saves in 56:50 between the posts. For Providence, Piper Cline scored both goals, Lily Procaccanti and Martu Torre Festa recorded one assist each, and Ava Porter made three saves in the win for the Friars.
Hofstra opens its Coastal Athletic Association schedule on Friday, September 18, with a 3 p.m. home contest against Northeastern.
NOTES:
-Hofstra is now 2-5 all-time against Providence.
-Both teams had 12 shots each, and
Malena Bertone led the Pride with three.
-The Pride totaled seven penalty corners and allowed four.
