Hamden, CT – The Hofstra field hockey team jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Quinnipiac before the Bobcats quickly evened the score and tallied the game-winner in overtime as Quinnipiac defeated the Pride 2-1 from Quinnipiac Field Hockey Stadium. Hofstra slips to 2-2 with the loss, and the win Quinnipiac improves to 2-3.
The Pride got off to a hot start with a goal 5:24 into the game off the stick of
Cara Zapach. A pass from the top of the arc by
Tess Satterfield got through the Quinnipiac defense and found Zapach, who directed the ball off the post and in for her first goal. The Hofstra lead didn't last long, however, as Quinnipiac's Rozemarijn van Keulen evened the score at 1-1 six minutes later. The Pride survived a Quinnipiac shooting barrage in the first quarter, with the Bobcats ripping seven shots, to keep the score at 1-1.
The teams finished the next three quarters with 11 total shots, six for Quinnipiac and five for the Pride, but both goalkeepers denied every shot that came their way to send the game to overtime. With seconds left in overtime, Ava Bleier finally got one past
Luci Hollister for the game-winner.
Hollister finished with a season-high eight saves against the Bobcats.
Hofstra returns to Cindy Lewis Stadium to face Providence on Sunday, September 13, at noon.
NOTES:
-The loss snaps a streak of five consecutive overtime wins dating back to last season.
-Clara Cañas recorded a defensive save during overtime.
-Satterfield's assist was the second of her career.
