Martinez, Castrataro Lead Hofstra In Doubleheader Split

Hempstead, NY - Carlos Martinez struck out 10 batters in a complete game victory with Tyler Castrataro leading the offense with three hits and four RBIs as Hofstra won the opening game of a CAA doubleheader against Monmouth, 7-3, Friday at University Field. The Hawks took the nightcap, 5-2. 

Hofstra moved to 18-25 overall and 12-14 in the CAA with the split. Monmouth is 26-20 overall and 17-9 in league play. 

Martinez (4-2) allowed three runs on seven hits in a 123-pitch outing. Two of the runs he allowed came on solo home runs. 

The Pride scored single runs in the first and second innings on RBI singles from Nick Gallello and Castrataro before the Hawks tied the game following a solo home run from Chris Walsh in the third and another solo shot from Nick Lovarco in the fourth. 

Hofstra responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, stringing four consecutive hits with two outs. Nick Biddle started the rally with a single. Castrataro doubled to deep right field to chase Biddle in with the go ahead run. JJ DeVito singled in Castrataro with the second run of the inning and then stole second base. Michael Brown capped the rally with a single up the middle to plate DeVito for a 5-2 lead. 

After the Hawks got a run back in the sixth on Jimmy Bruno's RBI single, Castrataro extended the Hofstra lead and closed out the scoring with a two-run home run to right center. 

Monmouth starter Ryan Mealy (4-4) took the loss after allowing all seven runs on 12 hits over five-plus innings. 

In game two, Hofstra led by a 2-0 score after three innings but the Hawks scored five unanswered to salvage the split. Danny Corona had an RBI double for Hofstra in the second inning and Gallello drove in a run with an infield single in the third. 

Monmouth's Aidan Bretschneider tied the game in the fourth with a two-run double and the Hawks took the lead in the fifth on Walsh's second home run of the day, a solo shot to left field. Bretschneider added two more insurance runs in the eighth with another two-run double. 

Tanner Sanderoff (3-4) took the loss in relief, allowing one run on two hits in 2 ⅔ innings. 

Monmouth starter Alec Couture (5-3) went seven innings, allowing two runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts. Austin Beard went the final two innings and allowed one hit to notch his second save. 

The teams conclude the series Sunday with a 12 p.m. start time.

Notes:
-Martinez's complete game was the first of his career.
-The 10 strikeouts were Martinez's second double-digit performance of the season.
-Biddle had five hits and scored three runs in the doubleheader.
-Castrataro matched his career-highs with three hits and four RBIs
