Hofstra Blanks Charleston In Opening Game Of CAA Championship

Wilmington, NC - Behind a dominant pitching performance from Carlos Martinez and a pair of six-run innings, fifth-seeded Hofstra blanked fourth-seeded Charleston, 13-0, in seven innings in the opening game of the 2026 CAA Baseball Championship on Wednesday afternoon at Brooks Field on the campus of UNCW.

The Pride improved to 21-27 with the win and will take on either top-seeded Campbell or second-seeded Northeastern in a winner's bracket game on Thursday. The Cougars slipped to 28-27 and saw their three-game winning streak snapped.

Martinez (6-2), who was named to the All-CAA First Team yesterday, scattered three singles over six scoreless innings and struck out six to win his fourth consecutive start.

Hofstra used aggressive base-running and good situational hitting, as well as taking advantage of a couple of Charleston defensive miscues to break the game open in the third. Tyler Castrataro led off with a double, advanced to third on a ground out and then scored on a fielder's choice grounder from Michael Brown, just beating the throw home from first base. A Charleston error resulted in a second Hofstra run and the Pride later loaded the bases with two outs. Tyler Cox dropped a single into left that drove in a pair and Nick Biddle followed with an opposite field two-run single to right that gave Hofstra a 6-0 lead.

The Pride added an unearned run in the fourth for a 7-0 lead. Danny Corona singled up the middle and went to second on an error. A sacrifice bunt from Michael Craig moved Corona to third and he scored on Brown's sacrifice fly to center.

Hofstra put up its second six-run frame in the seventh. CJ Griggs provided the big blast with a three-run home run to make it 10-0. The Pride plated two more runs on a fielder's choice and an error, before Craig's single brought in the Pride's final run.

Maddon McArthur came on in the seventh and allowed one hit with one strikeout to seal the victory.

Charleston starter Carter Harrington (3-5) took the loss, allowing seven runs (one earned) on five hits over three innings. Alex LaCoste had a pair of hits for the Cougars.
