Hofstra Shuts Out Stony Brook In Series Opener

Stony Brook, NY - Hofstra opened the game with five consecutive hits, including a two-run home run from CJ Griggs and an RBI single from Tyler Cox, to build a 3-0 lead and the Pride pitching tandem of Carlos Martinez and Tanner Sanderoff made it stand in a 4-0 victory in a CAA game at Joe Nathan Field Thursday.

The Pride came out of the gate firing on all cylinders. Michael Brown led off the game with a single and stole second. Griggs followed with his seventh home run of the season, a deep blast to right field. Gabriel Melara and Nick Gallello had back-to-back singles before Cox made it three in a row, with his base hit driving in Melara from second.

The score remained the same until the top of the ninth when Griggs blasted a second home run, this one a solo shot off the scoreboard in right field.

Martinez (5-2) was stellar once again as he went 8 ⅓ innings, allowing six hits and one walk with seven strikeouts. Tanner Sanderoff recorded the final two outs of the game, striking out one, to notch his second save of the season.

Griggs finished the day 3-5 with the two home runs and three RBIs. Cox had two hits, including a double, and an RBI. Nick Gallello and Michael Brown also had a pair of hits.
