Melara, Bauer Lead Hofstra Past Stony Brook; Hofstra Clinches Series

Stony Brook, NY - Gabriel Melara had three hits and four RBIs and Jackson Bauer threw 5 ⅓  scoreless innings of relief to lead Hofstra to an 8-1 victory over Stony Brook Friday at Joe Nathan Field. The Pride scored seven runs over the final three innings, including five in the eighth to break open a 1-1 game. The victory clinches the CAA series for the Pride ahead of Saturday's series finale.

Hofstra, which moved one step closer to securing a spot in the upcoming CAA Championship, improved to 20-26 overall and 14-15 in the CAA with the win. Stony Brook is 20-30 overall and 12-17 in league play. 

Melara homered in the first inning to put the Pride up, 1-0, and then hit a go ahead single in the seventh to give Hofstra a 2-1 lead it would not relinquish. The junior third baseman would add a two-run double in the Pride's big eighth inning. 

Bauer (2-1) allowed three hits and struck out four in relief of starter Sean Hamilton, who allowed a run on two hits in 3 ⅔ innings

Michael Brown had a double and a triple for the Pride and drove in two runs, while Tyler Castrataro also had two hits including a double. 

James Shaffer drove in the lone Stony Brook run with a single in the fourth. Micah Worley (6-5) took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits over 6 ⅓ innings. 

The teams conclude the series and the regular season Saturday at 1 p.m.

Notes:
-Six of Hofstra's nine hits went for extra-bases.
-Hofstra has allowed one run to the Seawolves over the first two games of the series. 
-Melara's home run was his sixth of the season. 
-Brown's triple was his second of the season. 
-CJ Griggs, Michael Craig, and Melara each scored two runs.
