Hofstra Posts Big Win Over Towson To Open Series

Hempstead, NY - CJ Griggs went 4-5 with two doubles, one triple, and the walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Hofstra posted a 12-1 CAA victory over Towson Friday at University Field. Pitcher Carlos Martinez turned in another fantastic start, allowing one run on five hits over 6 ⅓ innings. 

Hofstra moved to 16-23 on the season overall and 10-12 in league play with the win. Towson dropped to 17-26 overall and 5-17 in the CAA with the loss.

Hofstra charged out of the gates with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Michael Brown led off with a single and moved to third on a double from Griggs. Following a strikeout, Gabriel Melara brought in a run with a sacrifice fly. Nick Gallello made it a 2-0 game with an RBI double and then came around on Tyler Cox's single to make it 3-0. After stealing second, Cox would score on a single from Nick Biddle

The Pride would add a run in the second as Griggs doubled in Brown, who had singled and advanced to third on an error. Gallello made it 6-0 in the third with a leadoff home run to right field. 

Hofstra would add four more runs in the sixth as Griggs tripled in a run and Melara blasted a three-run home run. That made it a 10-1 game. The Pride would end it in the bottom of the seventh as Tyler Castrataro drew a one-out walk and came in on Griggs' team-best sixth home run of the season, a two-out blast over the scoreboard in right center.  

Martinez (3-2) allowed just five singles and struck out seven batters in an 86-pitch outing. His only run against came in the sixth when he allowed an infield single, a balk, and a run-scoring single to Brian Heckelman. Tanner Sanderoff came on with a man on first in the top of the seventh and, after a walk, struck out the final two batters to end the inning. 

Towson starter Dutch DeProspero (2-7) took the loss after allowing six runs on 12 hits over five innings. 

Griggs finished with four RBIs and three runs scored, while Melara was 2-3 with four RBIs as well. Brown also had three hits and three runs scored. 

The teams continue the series Saturday with a 1 p.m. start.

Notes:
-Hofstra had 16 hits, its fourth consecutive game with 11 or more hits.
-The 12 runs marked the third consecutive game in double-digits.
-Cox, Gallello, and Biddle each had two hits in the contest as well.
-Martinez notched his 10th career win, the 18th pitcher in program history to reach 10 career wins.
