Hofstra Rally Comes Up Short In Loss To St.John's

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra scored the final eight runs of the game but could not complete the comeback in a 12-10 loss to St. John's Tuesday at University Field. The Red Storm led 10-0 after the top of the fourth inning. The teams combined for seven home runs in the contest. 

Hofstra saw its record fall to 15-23 with the loss, while St. John's moved to 24-20. 

The Red Storm hits three home runs over the first four innings to build a 10-run cushion. Shaun McMillan had a two-run shot in the first, Adam Agresti added a two-run shot in the third, and Jayder Raifstanger hit a grand slam in the fourth. 

Hofstra used the long ball as well as CJ Griggs put the Pride on the board with a solo blast in the fourth to make it 10-1. Tyler Cox added a solo shot in the fifth to make it a 11-2 contest. 

With St. John's leading 12-2 in the seventh, Hofstra scored four runs to inch closer. George Holt had a two-run single, while Tyler Castrataro and Michael Brown had RBI singles. The Pride would score four more times in the eight with Holt getting another two-RBI single. Brown also singled home a run and Gabriel Melara hit a solo home run. 

But St. John's closer Evan Hoeckele shut the door over the final 1 ⅓ innings for his fourth save. In a scheduled bullpen game for the Red Storm, starter Joe Mascio (1-0) got the win after pitching a scoreless first in his season debut. 

Russell Hunter (0-2) took the loss for Hofstra after allowing five runs on five hits in three innings. 

Hofstra returns to action Friday when it opens a three-game CAA series at home against Towson at 2 p.m.

Notes:
-Reno Spagnoli allowed one hit over 2 ⅓ scoreless innings.
-Michael Heyman pitched a scoreless inning in his season debut.
-Brayden Gregg struck out the final two batters of the ninth inning in his ⅔ of an inning.
-Holt was 2-3 with two runs and four RBIs
-Nick Gallello had three hits including a double. 
-The teams combined to use 13 pitchers.
